Kaitlin McHugh's Earthy, Modern Silver Lake Home
L.A. based interior designer, Kaitlin McHugh is inviting us over to peek inside her beautiful Silver Lake home today. She's definitely got a touch of earthy, modern boho vibe. Am I right? Her home is just around the corner from some of the finest oysters (L&E) and shops (OK) in town. Totally jealous. What makes her even more awesome is that she majored in Printmaking, so we got to talk about our love for intaglio. Kaitlin lives with her boyfriend, Brendan Hines, who's a musician, and with their sweet puppy and kitty. She's also sharing her inspiring, creative journey with us. Take it away, Kaitlin!
I have a BA in Fine Arts with a concentration in Printmaking from The Colorado College. With a Pre-Med minor I dreamt of becoming a doctor without borders, but through hospital and clinic work I quickly found that the needles were not quite my calling. So, at about a year out of college, I spent a summer semester at the GSD at Harvard focused on Urban Design & Architecture and I was hooked. I packed up, returned west and was hired by an architecture firm in Park City. What began with hand-drafting evolved into interior design and eventually managing remodels and focusing on interior architecture.
For a romance, which would fail shortly after arrival, I left my cozy spot in Utah and moved my life to Los Angeles right as the economy tanked. I landed in an eco film production company. To climb my way back to design and to heal my heart I accepted a semester of study at the ECOSA Institute - a small architecture school focused on responsible, forward thinking design in Prescott AZ.
That fall I traveled to India for three months and upon return from India, my new muse, I took a position as the Director of Development and Special Collections at Natural Curiosities — a wholesale art house rooted in the home decor industry. For four years I worked closely with major interior designers developing custom art lines for their retail spaces as well as creating the perfect pieces for their private projects.
Since leaving NC, I have collaborated with SHFT to cultivate their interior style and design their first ever living space at the Filling Station in Miami. Also, I have joined forces with other independent designers on both residential and commercial projects in the Los Angeles area— from Malibu to DTLA.
I believe strongly in adaptive reuse and in the potential of gorgeous up-cycling, but I also find support of my contemporaries — of current artists and makers — critical.
My design spirit is pretty earthy. Like people, I adore layered spaces, without a lot of clutter and quite a bit of clarity. Hunting treasures (and then the perfect places to put them) is a game I want to play for a long time to come. I love environments that have patina and a bit of gloss; I love the stories told in the union of old and new.
Say hello to Charlie! She's the cutest!
