Five Ways to Bring Good Vibes into Your Bedroom

We’re back with another special makeover. This time around, we’re helping our best friend, Jill, who’s a frontline health worker, spruce up her bedroom. We want to give her a fabulous space so that she can come home to relax and recharge since she’s been putting her life on the line to help others during the pandemic.

Just from looking at her bedroom, you would’ve never guessed that her favorite colors are purple and pink and that she really loves bold spaces. Her bedroom desperately needed a vibrant personality. It should tell her story and her journey. Jill is super adventurous and loves the outdoors so I want her space to reflect that.

Here are five ways to bring some good vibes into a bedroom. And I got some help from Home Depot. You can find everything here from homedepot.com/decor. They have so many stylish pieces especially from their private labels, Home Decorators Collection and Stylewell. They’re all available exclusively online.

FOUNDATION • FURNITURE

The most important piece of furniture in your bedroom is your bed, so it should be a comfy one. This is the foundation and you want it to be solid. We replaced her old queen mattress with a king-size hybrid mattress and adjustable bed frame. She really wanted an adjustable frame for its benefits, like raising the bed to elevate her legs to reduce swelling since she’s on her feet all day. The next item that I think some people overlook is headboard. I was surprised to learn that Jill has never had a headboard ever. They help ground a bedroom and create a focal point. It’s like a chair with a back. It gives you that extra support. Here, we picked out a Stylewell woven hyacinth headboard. I love the woven texture and it adds a warm touch to the space. We had to secure the headboard to the wall instead of the frame since the frame is adjustable and that wasn’t an option. It worked out though. Next on this list are nightstands. I like matching ones so it’s more cohesive, like these modern, walnut nightstands. There are great for smaller spaces.

VIBE • COLOR

I always start with color when I design a space. Color creates a mood. It’s an emotion. It can also conjure up fun memories, like that first time you tried an olive and loved it (or hated it LOL). Since Jill’s favorite colors are purple and pink, we’re gonna sprinkle those colors into the space through a rug, pillows, bench, and art. I like to pick a piece and then gradually build around that. I found this beautiful antique-style rug that has all the sweet colors she loves. I just filtered the search through color and size on Home Depot and this popped up. It’s an 8x10. I wouldn’t go any smaller than that for a king-size bed. And I think I could’ve gotten away with a 9x12. For the bed, we dressed it up with a fun patchwork pillow sham by The Company Store. Jill also wanted an accent wall color so we went with this BEHR Russian Olive. I thought this would give the space a nice balance from the purple and pink colors. I tried to push her to do the entire room including the ceiling but she was afraid it was going to be too dark. Accent walls are a happy medium for those who want something bold but still bright and not too overwhelming. We painted the rest of the room white (BEHR Night Blooming Jasmine) cause you know how I feel about the color grey.

PERSONALITY • ART

Next, we wanna add some personality to the space and art is the perfect way to do that. They can be prints from your travels, family, favorite things, or color. We hung up photos she took in Banff. She also bought a couple of my fiber drawings and those are above the headboard. We also found this abstract purple painting that she liked from homedepot.com/decor. On the other side of that is another abstract piece by the artist Leroy Miranda Jr. It was a thank you gift from my fiance and I cause Jill and her family threw us a fabulous engagement party in Montauk two years ago. So that’s the story behind that art piece! You’re probably wondering what we did with her old art. It’s now hanging in the hallway!

BREATHE • PLANTS

Breathe life into the space with plants. We found this gorgeous dracaena to soften up a corner and we put it in a woven basket. We also snipped some greenery from Jill’s back yard and put them in a vintage vase she found at a flea market. And we found a Triostar plant that had green, pink, and purple to match the space! And Home Depot has a bunch of pretty pots and planters to put your plants in.

ENERGY • LIGHT

Natural and artificial lighting is so important in a space. Light gives you energy and also creates ambience. She had light filtering shades before which I wasn’t a fan of. She didn’t really open them cause they let in enough light but the room looked cloudy and gloomy, don’t you think? So we swapped them out for something a little more custom and colorful so she can open the shades all the way and let that sunshine in to warm the space. Now, let’s talk about artificial light. That ceiling fan. Gots to go! We updated with a simple and modern, semi-flush light fixture. We also got her a set of pear-shaped lamps with swirls for her nightstands. They’re playful and add a curvy element. And I always prefer soft white LED bulbs, which these came with.
