My Favorite Mid-Century Modern Pieces from AllModern

I would describe my personal design style as pretty eclectic: A little old, a little new, and of course a ton of color! That said, there are certain styles I gravitate to more than others, and Mid-Century Modern is one I’m always drawing inspiration from. I think one of the reasons it’s remained so popular all these years — and the reason I personally love it — is that it’s actually a lot more versatile than you think. In other words, no matter your current decor, you can find pieces that suit your space well, making it feel fresh and modern even though it’s got that nod to another era. If you’re not quite familiar with Mid-Century Modern as a design style, let me fill you in. As the name probably gives away, this movement started in the middle of the 20th century, but it didn’t get its name until the 1980s, when art historian Cara Greenburg wrote a book about it, Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s. To me, what defines this period is clean lines and organic shapes (often inspired by nature). For example, some of the most quintessential Mid-Century furniture pieces are Eero Saarinen’s tulip table and Charles and Ray Eames’ lounge chairs. 

As you probably know, I love hunting for vintage, but getting authentic Mid-Century pieces can be a hit or miss or they can be too pricey. Thankfully, AllModern has some MCM-inspired pieces that take a cue from the style and make them feel more contemporary, while being a lot more affordable. For example, I love this pendant light. It’s got the simple geometric shapes that were popular in Mid-Century design but it’s also minimalist enough to work in a variety of decor styles. You can also make it feel better incorporated by including other similar circular shapes throughout the room.

It’s all about the legs. You can spot tapered legs on chairs and tables from the Mid-Century movement. This detail on a modern piece of furniture gives a vintage feel. A perfect example are the armchairs. Also, the touch of brass on legs, like on this TV stand is another thoughtful MCM detail.  

And then of course there’s color to consider. Art is one of my favorite ways to spruce up a room, and Mid-Century art was all about color and shape, so including a piece of MCM-inspired art can be the perfect way to add in a touch of vintage that feels fresh. To get the look, shop for pieces like this abstract print, which plays with soft geometric forms and has a bold color palette. I found a bunch to create a gallery wall, too!
